Sunshine at Shortline Lakes: 2010 Collegiate All Stars
The 2010 Collegiate All Stars tournament has now come and gone as the battle of Midwest vs. East vs. West vs. South Central took place at Shortline Lake in Elk Grove, CA on May 22nd and 23rd. Team Midwest was comprised of 24 finely-tuned athletes that competed over the two day span against the top ten individual skiers for each event from the East, West and South Central. Collegiate All-Stars is a very unique event for collegiate skiing in that it is the only tournament skiers qualify individually for instead of as a team. Because of this, we often get to see some new faces at All-Stars from teams that didn’t qualify for Regionals or Nationals.
Skiers, supporters and Alumni all gathered in Elk Grove on Thursday and Friday to kick off the annual event. Some flying and some driving, everyone arrived safe and sound and ready to compete early Saturday. Saturday began with Men’s Slalom followed by Women’s Slalom. The sun was shining and Shortline Lake was glistening. Chief Driver Will Bush, world-renowned boat driver, had the slalom paths as tight as an arrow for the first event of the weekend. Team Midwest put up a good fight and ended up 2nd place in Men’s and Women’s slalom behind the West. Top finishers for the Midwest Men were Matt Knafla from Iowa State in 6th place with a half @ 35 off, Paul Tierney from Missouri State in 5th with 3 @ 35 off and Tyler Lorenz from UW-Madison in 4th place with 4.25 @ 35 off. The top Men’s slalom score was a tie of 3.5 @ 38 off from Storm Selsor of Arizona State and the tournament director of the weekend Brian Detrick. On the Women’s side, the top Midwest scores came from 2 ties. One tie for 9th place with a score of 4 @ 22 off for Iowa’s Maddy Baldwin and Minnesota’s Jane Erickson and another tie for 5th place with a score of 2 @ 32 off for Ball State’s Kayla McClure and UM-Flint’s Whitney Smith. The top score for Women’s Slalom came from Amanda Amos from Arizona State with a score of 1.5 @ 35 off.
After a brief intermission and some bouy changes, we moved into the trick event. After Men’s and Women’s slalom Team Midwest was in second place overall behind Team West and looking to make up some ground. Top Midwest women scores came from Whitney Smith in 10th with a score of 940pts, Jane Erickson in 8th with 1060 pts. and Maddy Baldwin in 5th with 1560 pts. The top women’s trick score again came from Arizona State skier Amanda Amos with a 2,210 point trick run. And from the Midwest Men, we had two scores in the top five and five in the top ten. In 6th place putting in Team Midwest’s 3rd best score was Steven Cyra with a score of 1310. And in the top five we had Matt Knafla in 5th with a score of 1890 and our top finisher was Tyler Lorenz in 3rd with a score of 2480. The top Men’s Trick Score was 3820 from Skip Wintter of Walnut Creek, CA. The women came in 2nd to the west by just 150 pts and the Team Midwest Men took down the mighty west by 155 points for first place! Great Tricking!
At the conclusion of Men’s Trick, it was time to call it a day and get ready for the banquet being held at the Detrick’s home on the North end of Shortline Lake. With a bit of rain on the horizon we moved all the tables and chairs on to the patio and began the feast. After the meal there were awards given for the Slalom and Trick Events and it was time for the night festivities to begin!
After some changes to the itinerary, it was time for Sunday and the big event of JUMP! Running alternating Men’s and Women’s the jump event lasted over six hours! Team Midwest was in second to Team West and hoping to jump all PB’s and have back-to-back All-Star titles. As the distances were tallied and the three event bags were being packed up, the top Team Midwest Women’s scores came in as follows. With a 71 foot jump, Jane Erickson came in 8th just one foot behind UW-Madison’s Heather Donen placing 7th with a jump of 72 feet. And in 2nd place with a leap of 106 feet was Kayla McClure. And just to make sure everyone knew Amanda Amos was the undisputed Women’s Champion, she won the jump event as well with a leap of 138 feet. Way to go Ladies!
The Men’s Jumpers put up some great scores as well with over half the Men’s Jumpers hitting the century club or better. Top three Midwest jumps were Steven Cyra with a 114 which tied him for 6th place, Ian Arvesen of Iowa State put up a huge 128 putting him in 5th and our top jumper Tyler Lorenz with a 146 earning him a 3rd place behind Skip Wintter with a 156 and the 2010 All-Stars Jump Champion Storm Selsor with a leap of 165.
Team Midwest Women finished second again behind the West and Team Midwest Men took home the Jump event by defeating the west by just 80 points.
Overall, Team Midwest had two Men on the podium. Steven Cyra finished 4th overall and Tyler Lorenz finished 2nd overall. The UW Badgers certainly showed up to the national event! For the Women, we had three women in the top 10 with Kayla McClure finishing 9th overall and Jane Erickson and Maddy Baldwin with another tie for 7th place overall.
At the end of the day, with a valiant effort made by all, Team Midwest took second place to the host region, Team West by just 770 points. Which can only mean one thing…..Cris Kodiak, Midwest Region Chairman will be dressed up by Harley Wallace at the 2010 Collegiate Nationals this fall. A big thanks goes out to Brian Detrick for all of his hard work putting this tournament together and to the Families of Shortline Lake for hosting the event. And thanks to all, competitors and supporters, who made the big trip West this year, it was one to remember for sure!
We look forward to the 2011 All-Stars as we return to Ahoskie, North Carolina (where Team Midwest dominated last year) to visit our friends at Beaver Lake and take on the three other Regions once again!!

Two Midwest Skiers Get Married!
Laura Wiacek and Cale Burdick got married on June 6th in Michigan! The bride looked stunning and the groom looked very handsome as well! Cale and Laura met through college skiing and it was a ski story romance. Congrats to the Burdicks!
What can you ski on?
Recently Steven Greene from Illinois State University proved that you can ski on almost anything, by skiing on a 2x4. And if that is not impressive enough, he gave the signal to drop the throttle, stepped off and began to barefoot.

Milwaukee Pro Tour Stop

The Malibu Open will be in Milwaukee this summer. The tournament will be Friday, August 6th and Saturday, August 7th. The main events for the tournament are Men’s Jump, Women’s Slalom, Men’s Slalom and Freestyle Jump. Qualifying will run on Friday, main events will run during the day Saturday and finals will be under the lights on Saturday night. There are cash prizes for all 4 events.
We are really excited about this tournament being here in Milwaukee and have recieved a great response from the city and the county parks commission. Milwaukee parks are some of the best in the country and Veterens Memorial park is one of the gems for the system. The lake the event will be on is about 100 yards off the beach of Lake Michigan and is protected from the wind by tree lines. The lake is natural but looks like a man made lake in the heart of the city and is located within walking distance of the downtown business district and is just a few hundred yards from the Calatrava art museum.
The county has also set up a cancer walk for that Saturday, which walks around the lake and brings in about 5000 people and adding those people to the numbers that the lake front attracts on an average weekend there could be over 10,000 people in the area of the event. In addition to the parks 2 lakefront resturants there will be concession stands with beer and food as well.
We already have most of the top skiers in the country registered for the event so we will get to watch the best of the best on the water.

What’s the easiest way to move a jump? With a Hummer that runs of vegetable oil of course! Sam Massa, an east coast skier, owns a yellow Hummer that runs completely on vegetable oil. Sam simply pulls his Hummer into any fast food restaurants and fills up! Now tell me that that wouldn’t be the best way to save money on your way to tournaments?!?!

Spring Tournament Wrap Ups
Jayna Trotzig Memorial
Written & Contributed by Matt Knafla
Early Saturday morning, the Great Plaines Kicked off their first spring tournament of the 2010 season with Men’s Slalom. For being so early in the year we saw some outstanding short line skiing. Skiing deep into 28 off Paul Tierney from Missouri State placed 3rd, in Second Tyler Lorenz from Madison ran 1.5 at an impressive 32 off, bring home the gold from Iowa State Matt Knafla skied 3 at 32 off. Next we moved on to the lovely women’s slalom event, with only two women running a complete pass. Maddy Baldwin of the University of Iowa just squeaking by took first with 2 buoys at 32 mph, coming in second place from Missouri State was Jordan Dutro with 1.5 buoys at 32 mph, and rounding out the top three was Sam Guiford with a 3.5 buoys. As the day went on the temperature kept rising and the winds surprisingly stayed calm, making this by far the nicest Iowa State spring tournament ever. It was so nice that there was a hand full of skiers taking lake showers, a very rare sight, reserved for fall weather. Men’s trick made for an exciting event with the top three guys tricking over 1000 points. Placing in third was Dan Shuman from Iowa State with 1120 points, taking second place from Iowa State with 1890 points was Matt Knafla, and placing first with an impressive 2780 points was Tyler Lorenz form UW- Madison. Moving onto women’s trick, in a three way tie for second place with 410 points was Lauren Sprenger from Madison, Jemma Wahl from UW- La Crosse , and Stephanie Elhoffer from Missouri State. Since time permitted we were able to start and finish women’s Jump on Saturday evening. Leaping 48 feet from Missouri State was Jordan Dutro who placed third, coming in second place with 50 feet was Lauren Sprenger from Madison, and Maddy Baldwin yet again taking first place jumped 63 feet. Saturday night made for an exciting night celebrating a wide variety of holidays from Christmas to Earth Day. Men’s jump rounded out the tournament bright and early Sunday morning. Placing in third place was Paul Tierney form Missouri State with a jump of 97 feet, taking home second place from Iowa State was Paul Ogren with a 119 foot Jump, and Tyler Lorenz with a boot of 139 feet placed first. Yet again another first for the Jayna Trotzig Memorial Tournament, Iowa State did not win the tournament but placed third overall. Taking second place overall was UW- Stout and with a safe margin of victory was the Badgers of UW- Madison.

Well Friday was a bit rainy during practice but that didn't stop us for long. Saturday was on the windy side but still let a few post some decent scores. It was apparent though that there is some rust to knock of before spring. One of the big highlights was watching our new recruit Kyle Dammeyer get 2.5 at 32 off. Kyle says hasn't ever jumped much (maybe at all) but looks forward to learning this summer and being ready for the fall. The top scores in the A-team were Kieth Sattler from BSU getting 1.5 at 22 off, Brad Ruff edging me out by 10 points for trick with a score of 750 points. Kayla McClure once again dominated the girls getting 2 at 32 off, and tricking 1270 but couldn't pull off the backflip at the end of her run. Red bull was there with bean bags and a tent, and the tournament was pulled by a new Nautique 200 and new (and one old) tournament team Mastercraft.
Neosho
Written & Contributed by Kindra Grossmeier
Despite the extreme winds and rain the weekend of April 24-25th the tournament proceeded like always in Neosho, WI. The tournament was hosted by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Friday night started out well with a giant bonfire that provided the teams with warmth in the cold wind and starting of the rain. Saturday morning started off wet, rainy, and cold but the skiers endured, the plan was then to get all of A team done before the nasty weather was to hit. The day started off with A team Men’s slalom simultaneously along with A team Woman’s Slalom. The top two mens slalomers were Matthew Knafla with a score of 69.00 and second was Ryan Brooks with a score of 58.00. The top two womens slalomers were first Heather Donen with a score of 51.00 and Laura Bernhard with a score of 2.00. Next the tournament moved right on to A Men’s and Women’s trick and finally squeaked in both A Men’s and Women’s Jump and B Team Jump. The trick scores were for women being first Laura Sampson with 410 points and in second was Lindsay Frensz with 400 points. The men’s winners were first place being Tyler Lorenz posting a score of 2,280 points with Matthew Knafla in second with 1690 points. Even when the jump situation wasn’t looking like it would get finished due to the jump getting off set from the wind some determined men jumped in the cold water to save the day. Top two Mens Jumpers were Ryan Brooks with a jump of 100 feet followed by Tyler Lorenz with a 99 foot jump. The top two Women Jumpers were Heather Donen with a jump of 67 feet followed after by Laura Bernhard with a 42 foot jump. Saturday night included a chilly fiesta of a theme of “Party in the MCWSA” where there was guest appearances from stars such as Lady Gaga, The Spice Girls, The Beetles, Alan Jackson, Taylor Swift, and Nick Jonas. Teams braved the weather again Saturday night and then made strong finishes on Sunday morning completing the B Team line ups.
Hawkeye Hypothermia
Written and Contributed by Tom Stelzer
Friday afternoon was looking grim for Hawkeye Hypothermia 2010. Storms brewing throughout the state of Iowa threatened the viability of Friday practice and safe camping for the night. Luckily, the ski gods smiled on Northeast Iowa, and there were sunny skies as far as the eye could see by 6pm. After the early arrivals got in their practice sets, the evening’s shenanigans could begin. There was a bonfire, beverages, and much rejoicing with regards to the weather and being reunited with our MCWSA brothers and sisters. But of course, everyone was safely tucked away in their tents by 10:30 ish pm.
On a warm cloudless morning, boats were being put in the water by 6:50am. The shanty town alongside Eagle Lake in Evansdale, IA, was nearly lifeless. However, after a couple quick course mappings for the beautiful 2009 Mastercraft Prostar 197 and the 2009 Ski Nautique 206, Men’s Slalom was ready to being. Before our 8am start time, most of men’s round 1 was already down to the dock with only minor, gentle coaxing required to draw skiers from their tents. Teams came off the dock swerving well with buoy counts into the 50s in the first round. After a fiery start, the winner’s final buoy count was 78 by Ryan Brooks of Wisconsin Stout. The only skier to run 15 off, 36mph. Second place went to Matt Knafla of ISU with 68 buoys, and Jon Bice took 3rd with 65.
Men’s B Team Slalom followed Men’s A with the winner, Chris Musset of The University of Iowa, capturing 2 buoys on his sideways-double-booted-slalom-ski-with-goofy-extra-fins-thingy (I believe they’re called wakeboards).
Up next was Women’s Slalom. It was a 1-2 buoy total shootout until along came Brittany Lynch of Iowa State University. She tore through the course on one of those wakeboard things raking in 20 buoys over 4 passes; consequently landing her in second place for the event. Maddy Baldwin came along a couple skiers later and grabbed 2.5 buoys at 22’ off, 34 mph to put her into first place. Laura Bernhard of ISU and Brigid Burke of Wisc-Madison tied for 3rd with 2 buoys each.
After the conclusion of Women’s Slalom, it was trickin’ time. The gents came off the dock with two skis, one ski, and the increasingly popular, wakeboard. Despite some stellar 2 ski trick runs and inverts galore from the shredders (wakeboarder term), the solo trick skiers took the top spots. Matt Knafla of ISU took 3rd with his toe pass, Craig Planton of Milwaukee took 2nd place, and none other than Daniel Shuman of ISU took first with a tremendous performance throwing down 1120 points worth of tricks.
Men’s B trick was a close battle with only a 160 point spread from top to bottom. Shane Burke of Iowa State managed to edge out Chris Mussett of the University of Iowa for the top spot.
Following the gentleman again came the ladies. Just like the fellas, the women proved that two trickers or a wakeboard are no match for the elite few that can tame the wild beast known as a single trick ski. Those rogues atop of the leader board spun like crazy and etched their names in the history books with Brigid Burke and Lindsay Frensz of Wisconsin-Madison nabbing 3rd and 2nd place, respectively. Maddy Baldwin of Iowa rocked her toe pass accumulating 1710 points in less than 20 seconds.
The women barely had enough time to towel off before they were in their jump suits and headed over the beautiful 5ft red wedge. Women’s A jump landed Andrea Tragos of Marquette in 3rd place with a 38 foot leap, and Brittney Lynch of Iowa State squeaking into 2nd with a 39 footer. Maddy Baldwin took home the gold with a 70 foot boot.
The sun was on its way down, but we weren’t done yet! Men’s Jump was a race against time, or at least daylight. Very respectable scores from the 50s-70s were being posted until the big guns came along in the final round. Craig Planton of Milwaukee took himself into the century club with a 101ft leap on his second jump, putting him in 1st place until Jon Bice of Wisconsin-Stout slipped into his team’s D3’s and catapulted himself 104 feet. However, there was one more man to come. Knowing the score to beat and lucky enough to be last off the dock, Tim Camodeca of Wisconsin-White Water took a mean cut to the ramp and turned it into a first place worthy 109ft jump on his second attempt.
Men’s B team and officials managed to get their jumps in before dark as well. The B team top spot was determined by a mere .1 meters. Chris Mussett, on his wakeboard, yet again, beat out David Southwick, both gentlemen from the University of Iowa jumping 39 feet. Chris’ 11.9mtr leap nipping David’s 11.8mtrs.
The overall winner’s of the day are some familiar names from each event. Women’s Overall went to Maddy Baldwin of Iowa, followed by Brittney Lynch of Iowa State, and Brigid Burke of Wisconsin-Madison. Men’s Overall winner was Dan Shuman of Iowa State, followed by Ryan Brooks and Jon Bice of Wisconsin-Stout, respectively. Men’s B overall went to Chris Mussett of Iowa.
As you’re all probably getting slightly bored with my excessive wordage by now, I’d like to thank all participants in Hawkeye Hypothermia 2010, and especially thank you to all who helped out in any way during the weekend! We couldn’t have gotten the tourney done in one day without everyone’s help and cooperation. Thanks again and happy skiing!
Love,
Tom
The Midwest Welcomes a New Ski School
Kevin Melnuk, a collegiate skier for Arizona State University, has started a ski school in Jerseyville, IL. A prime location for Midwestern skiers. I asked Kevin to give us some information about his new ski school and how it got started.
I decided to start a ski school for a couple of reasons. First, I have always enjoyed coaching my friends and helping others improve in the sport and secondly, collegiate skiing has really made me want to do more coaching. I've really enjoyed coaching every level of waterskiing at ASU from beginners to world - class skiers. ASU and collegiate skiing has given me more exposure to more beginners and it’s a great opportunity for me to give back to the sport I love.
The ski school will be hosted at a private lake in Jerseyville, IL, which is just outside of St. Louis, Mo. The camps start June 7th and run until July 23rd. Skiers can book by the set, day, week or whatever they prefer. Room and board are included when a student books for the week. Anyone who is interested can
check out my website www.kevinmelnuk.com where they will find pictures of the site, info about me, rates, and much more.
Miss South Dakota…a former MCWSA skier!
Written and Contributed by Ashley Colburn
What do water ski tournaments and beauty pageants have in common? Duh…The swim suit competition of course. Emily Miller is currently Miss South Dakota and an alumnus of the Missouri States water ski team.
When Emily was a freshman at Missouri State her parents encouraged her to join a club. All throughout high school she had been involved in a number of clubs and various community organizations. College was no different she went to a career fair and discovered the water ski team. That’s where her love for skiing began. Emily quickly learned to slalom ski, wake board, and jump ski. Though skiing became a passion that Emily loves, her life long dream has always been to become a Radio City Rockette. Emily’s parents urged her to get serious about pursuing her dance career. So she transferred to University of Nevada Las Vegas, were she is majoring in dance and performance, and is minoring entertainment and accounting. When she made the transfer to UNLV she really had to start all over and make a whole new set of friends. This was another experience of creating new bonds, and really focusing on what most important to her, which is her future in dance. Emily will be graduating in December and then moving to Los Angeles, California to pursue opportunities as a professional dancer.
On May 16th Emily will be competing in the Miss USA pageant at the Planet Hollywood hotel in Las Vegas. Her ultimate goal is to make the top five, which would be a major accomplishment since South Dakota has not made the top fifth teen in the last thirty-seven year. Emily said “It’s a new year and that she has been training really hard with some really great coaches so right now she is comfortable and confident, the nerves have not set in justEmily said her experiences participating in collegiate water skiing are very similar to participating in her pageants. “You get to travel all over and meet new people and it is constantly changing and exciting.” She described the feeling of going into a pageant like going into a jump, “you don’t know if you are going to land or if you are going to crash and burn.”
Emily’s experiences in the water ski world prepared her to expect the unexpected. So far her favorite experience of being Miss South Dakota is getting to go into schools and inspire children, explain to them that they should pursue their dreams and always take opportunities to learn and grow. With that said let’s support Emily while she makes her dreams come true and set a new personal best of making the top five in the Miss USA pageant.
What to do this summer?

Summer Shake Down
Get your teams together and bring out your Alumni for the (hopefully 1st annual) Team Midwest Summer Shakedown! We all love collegiate tournaments, and after finals, we don't get to see each other for months until fall collegiate season. Let's get back together again for a class C tourney with a collegiate feel! Since this tournament is a class C, it is open to all levels from novice to open. As we all know, a collegiate tournament requires that we follow certain rules. Have the Summer Shakedown be a class C allows alumni and current collegiate skiers alike to ski in their own divisions instead of requiring that all participants ski at 34/36 mph top speed slalom, jump on a 5ft ramp @ 31.7mph, or only get 1 trick pass.
For the team scoring portion of the tournament, we will organize an excel spreadsheet that calculates team point allocations similar to a standard collegiate tournament. If jumpers are hitting a 5.5 ft ramp, we'll reduce their distance according for the team scoring, but of course, their individual official USA Waterski score will be unaffected. In other words, we'll try to standardize all scores for each event for the team rankings. Unlike collegiate, teams won't need to designate their top 5 male or female skiers like we do with our A teams. Instead, everyone can just ski and whichever skiers have the top scores will be considered the "A team" for each school.
We have Winter Conference, so why not get reunited in the summer too? But this way, we can actually ski!
Entry fee is a flat rate of $35 for 3 events, 1 round of each, just like collegiate. There is Camping on site and hotels near by.
More details to come! I hope I'm explaining this tournament decently well; feel free to ask questions. But don't worry, it all makes sense in my head haha.
All skiers are welcome to attend, and groupies are encourage to come as well! It'll be a rockin' good time. Saturday night's theme party is still TBA, but trust me, it'll be good.
TEAM MIDWEST FO LIFE!

Interview with pro skier April Coble Eller
On April 1, 2010 I talked with professional water skier and water ski school owner, April Coble Eller. Among April’s many career accomplishments, she is a 26 time US National Champion, US Masters Overall Champion, USA Water Ski Athlete of the year (2 times), USA Water Ski Coach of the year and a regular member on the US Pro Tour. Her slalom best is an amazing 5 buoys at 39 off; she has jumped 154 feet, and tricked 5750 points. April lives in Lillington, North Carolina with her family at Coble Water Ski School.
How did you start your skiing career? Did you start with your family as a child, introduced by friends, joined a team in college?
April: I started skiing at three years old, because it was what my parents did. I started competing at five years old, I started professional skiing at 18, and in 1995 we started Coble Ski School.
Did you ski on a collegiate team? If so, which?
April: I skied for UNC - Chapel Hill. When we got there, we kind of the revived team. I also went to ULM, when it was NLU, for once semester and that semester we won Nationals. I then went back to Chapel High to graduate.
Can you tell me a little bit about your collegiate skiing experience? Did you three-event? Did you win any awards? Are you still close with your teammates?
April: I skied three events, I won Collegiate All Stars several times - I believe two or three times. In my senior year, they had the first ever Collegiate Worlds, where I won and set the Collegiate Worlds record in jump & slalom. The best thing that has come out of collegiate skiing would be my husband, Chris, who I met in college. He started working here at Coble Ski School as a Sophomore, we then went on and got married!
What is your skiing experience like now? How has it changed from college, to pro skier, to running a ski school, to having a family?
April: I skied professionally before college when I was 18, then I went to college and in college I had a break in skiing. The training time was not as intense - when we trained, we worked hard, but I had other things in my life, like school. I did ski on pro tour in college, and since I graduated from college, skiing was taken to a whole other level. I made it my career.

April, Chris, Landis, and Kamryn Eller
What do you think has changed the sport the most in the past 10 years? Technology, scoring, skis?
April: The one thing that I think has made the sport better and more fair is cruise control. It really made it fair for skiers and easier for drivers.
Where do you see the sport going in the next 10 years? Growing? In another direction? Do you think waterskiing will ever be in the Olympics?
April: I don’t think it will ever be in the Olympics. Here at ski school, each year we keep growing. We are water ski/wakeboard specific, and if you come here you have to want to ski. As a whole, as long as we keep gas prices down, because that can keep people from going out, our sport will keep growing.
What would you like to see the sport get to in years? More affordable for families? See entry fees and equipment become cheaper?
April: Yes, all of that. I know that HO is making an affordable ski, which is basically just like the A1, but it is a lot more affordable. Right now, you cannot get a high-end ski for less than $1200. With all the new technology, companies are finding new ways to keep performance up and costs down. I know Masterline used to out source the braiding of their ropes, they now changed it into an in house production. So the qualify of this equipment is still there, while keeping the prices affordable.
How did Coble Ski School get started?
April: In 1994, my parents bought the property, and we purchased it as a training site. My dad started to retire, I was graduating from college, my sister was still in college and we didn’t have the money to afford to keep up the property. So we sold then house where we used to live and we started teaching people how to ski. We started 16 years ago to try to make money for skiing and keeping the land. For the next three years after, we tripled in numbers. Before we knew it, it grew out of control, faster than we as a family could take, so we started hiring collegiate skiers to come work for us as a summer internship. And now we are the largest ski school in the world!

Coble Ski School Aerial View
What is the best part of coming to Coble Ski School as a skier?
April: If you are true skier, then we have the very best stuff for you. We have the best boats, the best equipment, the best lakes, the best weather. We have a top-notch atmosphere with the top-notch people.
What is the best advice anyone has every given you about skiing?
April: The first time I ever ran 35 off in a tournament was in Detroit, Michigan. And my dad said. “We have trained hard, we have worked hard, your ski is as best as it can be - just keep on, keeping on.” If you keep going and never give up, you will succeed. And that always comes back to me, “just keep on, keeping on.” Just as in life. I ran 35 and made it to the finals.
If you could plan the perfect skiing day, any amount of money, any place, with any person (s), anything….what would it be like?
April: It would be 90 degrees outside and the water at 85 degrees. I would be here at my home, with the best boat, on our lake with no wind, with all my friends and family.
Wondering how to get your boat ready for summer??

Contributed by Mark Grabowski
Spring is finally here. Finals are fast approaching, flip flops are flip floppin’, and the ice is out of the lakes. It’s time to get out and take advantage of the water before the official start of the Wally season, also known as Memorial Day. Since you’ve got nothing else to read and/or memorize this time of the year, we’ll throw you this list of tips to help make sure your first day on the water of the season isn’t wally-rific.
1. Engine Fluids, Pumps, Batteries, Flux Capacitors, Discombomulators, blah blah whatevers:
Yeah, chances are you (or your Dad, Uncle, Grandpa, Sugar Daddy, etc) paid the dealer or someone else to take care of these. If by the off chance you do your own maintenance, then I probably would just be telling you stuff you already know (or should know). We’re just going to try to just whip together a quick list that blankets the largest demographic of readers of this e-newsletter.
2. Do what Stevie Wonder never got the chance to do to his boat – A Visual Inspection of Everything.
We’ll assume you just got the boat out of storage / back from the dealer / out of the repo lot. Take a walk around it and in it. Anything look weird / ugly / not right? Yeah, I thought so. Let’s see if we can address a few of those issues.
PROPELLER - Your Prop has more dents and dings than Kate Gosselin’s thighs – It goes without saying – your prop is one of the most valuable parts of your boat’s drivetrain. It’s also more vulnerable than Lindsey Lohan after 8 shots of Kesslers. Who knows what lurks underwater? Whatever it was, you / your brother / your Dad / your Haitian refugee hit it. Even if it’s just a small ding, it can make a big difference, especially if it’s a 3-blade prop. Most new boat can spin the prop at 5200 revolutions per minute – quick math, that’s almost 87 revolutions PER SECOND. Just one little ding gets magnified significantly at that speed. Out-of-rotation props can lead to more than just a vibration in the steering wheel – it can (and will) damage bearings and seals. Pull it off and put on the spare. Or if you don’t know how, most dealers will pull it off and install it for free when you pay them.
INTERIOR - if your interior has more plants growing on it than your roommate’s closet shelf, you need to get to work. Mold & mildew typically doesn’t grow during the winter, but if you left it from last year or if you wait till June to uncover your boat to take it out, then grab your scrub brush. If you have a newer boat, DON’T reach for just any cleaner. Check your manual or call your dealer to find out what to use. Newer vinyl has UV inhibitors in it and when scrubbed with the wrong chemicals, it accelerates the deterioration of the vinyl and threads. If you have an older boat, Soft Scrub with Bleach along with a nylon bristle scrub brush typically does the trick. Note, sometimes this can leave light bleach spot on your cutoff jorts – be careful. Vacuum the carpet (don’t forget to get under the seat and in all the other compartments, slacker), wipe off the dash, and clean out all the Keystone Light cans from the anchor locker.
Hey, while you’re crawling around check all the 4” plastic vent hoses that are always in the way of the stowage of your prized kneeboard. These vent hoses, although seemingly useless, actually are very important – the ones in the front deliver fresh air to your engine. The ones in the back help vent the nasty air from your bilge. A good fix that will last about 7 minutes would be duct tape. A better fix would be replacing the hose or fixing it by inserting and clamping a piece of similar-sized rigid pipe.
Don’t jump out just yet. Giiiirrrl – yo bilge be nasty! Grab some of your Moms / Stepmoms / Dad’s 22 year old girlfriend’s dish soap (Joy, Dawn, Palmolive, etc) and squirt that in your bilge and ski locker areas. Give it a good spray with the hose and then scrub as many areas as you can. Rinse it out and let it drain through the drain plug hole. Make sure the drains from areas like the ski locker are clear also. If clogged stick a wire hanger or similar concocted device through it to clear the clog. If this is clogged, it will hold water in your ski locker and not let it get to the bilge where your bilge pump is. Hey, speaking of which…
Now is a good time to locate your drain plug and put that in. Since you’re wasting the water to rinse your bilge out, fill up your bilge part way and make sure your bilge pump works – in both manual and automatic. Working? Good. Not Working? Check the fuse or breaker. Don’t know where that is? Well call your mechanic, but most are either under the dash or by its respective switch. Either way, if it’s blown, there’s probably something else wrong.
EXTERIOR – Hey, you made your dad / grandpa / blackmailed local politician order your boat in that pink / yellow color combo. Now show it off! Get the wax out and hand wax the boat everywhere there’s shiny fiberglass. Yes, even on the inside. And yes, even under the boat – especially under the boat. Also, although it won’t damage anything – try not to get the wax all over the black rubber pieces. It looks lame. And your boat is a reflection of you – even if it is pink and yellow. And don’t use the same wax you used to shine your ’94 Beretta. Use an actual marine wax. This stuff is available at marine stores and pretty much everywhere else regular car waxes are sold.
Speaking of lame, how about your teak platform? They sell fancy kits to restore these, which do work well. However, if you’re broke because you blew the subwoofers out in your Dodge Neon, there’s a cheap and quick way to do this. First, get me an ice pick, a snorkel, and some tin foil. Next, get yourself a hard-bristled scrub brush. If you can, take your platform off the boat. After that, mix up some bleach and water (usually a 50-50 blend does the trick). Scrub the platform with the bleach water being careful not to get any on your jorts. Let it dry, and now use the Teak Oil or Teak Stain that you bought / lifted from your local boating store / hardware store / Wal-Mart. Rub that on with a dry lint-free towel or paintbrush, and you’re back in business. Thanks for the ice pick, by the way.
TRAILER – One of the more vital pieces of equipment for your boat, and often the most neglected. Check the tire pressure. Most trailer tires are supposed to be set at around 50-55 psi. Check your sidewall for your rating. While you’re hanging around by your tire, give it an once-over. Any cracking on the sidewall? Any screws in the treads? Any cats underneath? If yes, then you may want to consider having your tires (and / or cat) replaced. BTW, never have a trailer tire plugged – they should always be taken off the rim and patched from the inside.
If by some chance you actually have a grease gun, then go ahead and give the bearing a few pumps. However, you should always repack your bearings every few years or so (or have someone repack them). Pumping grease in through the bearing buddy is a good maintainer, but it doesn’t get grease to everywhere it needs to be. Have a newer boat? Many newer trailers have oil-bath bearings which are sealed and don’t need grease. Make sure you can see the oil in the hubs.
Grab your can of WD40 and spray the trailer wire connector. Make sure all the metal contacts are clean. While you got that can in your hand, go ahead and spay all the moving parts – winches, latches, rollers, etc. Stop for a minute and spray some ants and light them on fire. Go back to lubricating the trailer.
TOWER – So you have a tower, or as old people refer to them – “cage-thingies”. Whatever they’re called, they, like redheaded step children, need love too. Remove the knobs or bolts that you normally remove to lower it down. Put some anti-seize lubricant on the threads (available at any auto parts or hardware store). Don’t want to buy the anti-seize lubricant? Use your WD40. Assemble everything. Make sure all mounting hardware is nice and tight. Make sure all of the 1,200 speakers you have up there are also secure. God knows you wouldn’t want one of those falling and hitting you on the dome piece. Make sure your board racks are secure too.
DASH – Sit down and play with all the switches like you’re a 6 year old at a boat show. Make sure everything works or lights up. The last thing you want is to be idling across the lake at 2 am with your friends singing Miley’s “Party in the USA” and have someone rip across your bow because your lights weren’t working. That song would never be the same to you again.
ENGINE – Calm down. You don’t need to know what you’re looking at. Just look at it. You may be a Women’s Literature major, but you still know that a hose clamp shouldn’t be broken and hanging, a wire shouldn’t be exposed and blackened, a hose shouldn’t be cracked, or a belt shouldn’t be frayed, etc. If it doesn’t look right to you, take a picture with your iPhone and send it to your dealer asking them what they think. See, your iPhone is good for other things besides games and sexting your significant other!
PRE-LAUNCH - Ok, so you did everything, hooked it up to the Tahoe and are headed to the ramp. Stop on your way and fill it up with fresh gas. You can use Dad’s credit card – I won’t say anything. Finally you get to the ramp. I know you and your buddies love to do the quick launch where you unhook everything, back down real fast, hit the brakes, and throw the boat out into the water while all the Bayliner couples watch in amazement. There’s a lot wrong with that, but I won’t complain – you get out of my way faster. But for the first launch of the season, take your time. Put the plug(s) in, back the boat in to where it’s just floating in the back and start it up. Open the engine compartment. Make sure there is no water pouring in. During most winterizing procedures, the engine is drained, and sometimes the correct hoses / plugs don’t always go back where they belong. Run the ballast system pumps (if so equipped). Check the bilge and make sure there’s no water leaking in. Let the engine run for a few minutes and watch the gauges making sure everything looks normal. Finally, put the Def Leppard Hysteria CD in. Does it sound ok? No, it doesn’t sound ok. It sounds f*ckin’ awesome. Now enjoy your spring sets.

WINTER CONFERENCE XIII
Winter Conference XIII proved itself strong confirming things only get better with age. THE Ohio State University did an amazing job of hosting. Huge thanks to the Ohio State team for everything they contributed to make the conference a huge success.
The day started off with the captains meeting to discuss a wide range of items beginning with a few rule changes.
° To accommodate each region for Winter Conference, it was decided that teams interested in hosting WC must submit a bid by April 1st. If no bids are received by this deadline or the board deems the bids unacceptable the deadline will be extended by 1 month and this sequence will continue until a successful bid and vote is reached. By May 1st each conference (Great Lake and Great Plains) will vote via email ballot on the top two bids from their conference, respectively. The region will then vote from the four bids (two from each conference) and determine the hosting school.
° Do No Harm Rule was also added into the bylaws. This meaning, if you have only one score for All-Star qualifications you get a 25% penalty on that one score. If you have two scores and the average of those two scores is lower than a 25% penalty on your highest score - then the 25% penalty on one score will be used as your All-Stars average. Therefore-do no harm by skiing another tournament.
Elections were next. Congratulations to: Christy Kingsmill, newly voted Regional Vice Chairman, Shelly Tranchita, newly voted Board Secretary, Jim Grabowski, newly voted Great Plains Chairman, Gretchen Storm, newly voted Team Recruitment Chair, Andy Hipskind, newly voted Team Development Chair, Tom Stelzer newly voted Alumni Liaison, and Stephanie Elfhoffer, newly voted Officials Chairman. Cris Kodiak remains Regional Chairman, Jon Bice remains Board Treasurer, and Dan Pabst remains Great Lakes Chairman.
Following elections were the clinic sessions given by professional water skiers Scot Ellis (website), Thomas T-Mo Moore (website), Billy Susi (website), and Ryan Dodd (website). Thanks to all of professionals for leaving their sunny locations to make the trip to deliver great advice.
The theme of the evening was Fallen Favorites and the Lord (Jim Grabowski) knows that Team Midwest did not disappoint. It was the only place where you could have had Bob Ross paint you a picture, witness the birth of Jesus, and have Billy Mays sell you some Oxyclean! What a night. Thanks to everyone who came out and made the conference a memorable experience! Looking forward to WC XIV!

MCWSA Grandmother Passes on |
|
Dottie Troeger of North Bend, OH passed away on Wednesday morning, January 20th, 2010 at the age of 72 years old after a hard fought six month battle with cancer. Dottie is one of the most senior and well known skiers in the State of Ohio and is sure to have touched the heart of anyone who came in contact with her. Dottie is the grandmother of MCWSA skiers Chris Van Treese and Ben Van Treese. Dottie skied in her first National Championship in 1969 at Myers Lake in Canton, OH. In 1972 she bought her first pair of "store bought" trick skis, prior to that she competed on homemade skied built by her husband Ron. Throughout the 70's Dottie and Ron skied at Happy Lake in Fairfield, OH which was eventually moved to Morrow, OH. Around 2000, the Troeger's started skiing in Walton, KY at Cruises Creek where they skied every afternoon through last summer. From 1998 to 2008 Dottie took Top 3 in tricks at Nationals and Top 5 in slalom every year with National Trick Titles in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007. Dottie currently holds the midwest all tournament records for W7 & W8 Tricks with 2,170 & 1,860 points respectively. She also holds the W8 midwest championship record in trick and the W7 and W8 midwest record capable tournament records in trick. With so many top regional and national performances, it's no surprise that Dottie also holds the W6, W7, & W8 State Records in both trick & slalom. On top of so many skiing accomplishments, Dottie also found time to be a senior rated 3-event judge and was also a scorer. It's hard to describe in words how much Dottie will be missed at the lake every weekend but there are a number of skiers whose lives Dottie has touched: "Such a fun & loving woman. I'll always cherish the things I learned from her. RIP" -- Calli Newman, Cincinnati, OH "I am one of very few that goes back into the mid 1960's as a young boy remembering Dottie. Her and Ron and later Miss Libby , always would attend the Athens Boat and Ski Club tournaments on the Ohio river. She was a goddess on the water. The countless years of service she has dedicated to water skiing in Ohio, makes her the godmother of water skiing in Ohio. She will never be forgotton and I will truly miss her." -- Mike Meek, Albany, OH "I will always hear her yelling from the boat....PULL!" -- Debbie Kern, Fairfield, OH "I feel like I didn't even know her that long but she was one of the coolest people I've ever met. I will miss her." -- Brad Ruff, Cincinnati, OH "Tournaments will always be missing a little something without Dottie there. I still remember the first time I met Dottie. It was my first AWSA tournament ever and was held at Hidden Lake in 1999. Not only was she the first skier to come up and ask me how I did after I skied but she was by far the most energetic person at the lake and was always excited when the kids skied." -- Greg Kuenning, Cincinnati, OH "Water skiing has lost another great friend and ambassador." -- Tim McKune, Lexington, KY "She was a great lady." -- Karl Dammeyer, St Marys, OH "She was an amazing woman, I learned so much from her." -- Casey Thress, Cincinnati, OH Our hearts and prayers go out to Dottie's husband Ron, her only daughter Libby Van Treese, along with Dottie's son-in-law Jeff and Dottie's four grandchildren Adam, Chris, Ben, & Emily. Dottie is also survived by her 93 year old mother and a brother. Rest In Peace Dottie. |

7 Midwest Teams heading to California! |
|
There are 2 wildcards spots that are awarded to teams from across the country for the NCWSA Collegiate National Championships. The Midwest already earned the one wildcard spot based on the region's D2 performance at Nationals last year. So the first wildcard spot went to the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. The 2nd wildcard goes to the winner of the psuedo-tournament that features the top three teams from each regionals, that did not qualify for Nationals. The scores are based off of their averages from the fall season. We knew the midwest had a good chance of taking the last wildcard spot. What we didn't know, is that the midwest teams would go 1-2-3 in the tournament! After some ups and downs in the scores last night on the live selection show, along with numerous lead changes, the midwest ended up 1,2,3. Missouri State (last year's wild card winner) took 3rd. Wisconsin Stout in a bid for their first trip to nationals fell one spot short in 2nd. And the Wolverines of Michigan took the crown! For the first time in history, the midwest will have 7 teams at Nationals! As amazing as it sounds - Michigan and Cincinnati, our two wildcard teams, have a very legitimate shot at winning Division 2. Kansas and Wisconsin are also poised for a strong D2 finish. Honestly, any of those teams could take the crown. Those D2 schools will join their Midwest D1 counterparts - Purdue, Iowa State, and Illinois. Any of those D1 teams, could place as high as 5th in country! Here are the results from the psuedo tournament. During the show we will go rapidly event by event through the NCWSA Wildcard pseudo tournament which pits the top 3 teams from each region that did not already qualify for Nationals. As you know, the Midwest has 3 dogs in the fight - University of Michigan, Wisconsin Stout and Missouri State - 3 of the favorites to win the event! The winner of this event will be selected for the 22nd and final, national team slot. Live webcams of some of the teams waiting to hear the results is just part of the action! See you at ncwsa.com at 7:00pm CST. |

NCWSA.com has put up the team ranking list for all teams in the USA. When customizing the rankings, we were able to create the Top 16 list of teams in the midwest. So if Regionals were to happen today, this would be the top 16. The Conference championships will decide who gets to march on to Decatur, IL for the Midwest Regionals. Please don't forget, the midwest is guranteed a 6th team at Nationals this year, with a chance at a 7th team based on the mock tournament. Right now, that would mean Wisconsin Stout Blue Devils would be punching a ticket to Bakersfield for the first time in their team history! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Without further ado, here is your Midwest Top 16, heading into the Conference Championships. | 1 | Iowa State University | IWS | M | GP | 28890 | | 2 | Purdue University | PUR | M | GL | 28765 | | 3 | University of Cincinnati | CIN | M | GL | 28375 | | 4 | University of Michigan | MCH | M | GL | 26985 | | 5 | Univ of Wisc Madison | MAD | M | GP | 26785 | | 6 | Univ of Wisc Stout | WST | M | GP | 25950 | | 7 | University of Illinois | ILL | M | GP | 25795 | | 8 | Missouri State Univ | MOS | M | GP | 24405 | | 9 | Grand Valley St Univ | GVS | M | GL | 22680 | | 10 | Michigan State Univ | MST | M | GL | 20265 | | 11 | Kansas University | KAN | M | GP | 19795 | | 12 | Ohio State University | OHS | M | GL | 17005 | | 13 | University of Iowa | IOW | M | GP | 16890 | | 14 | Univ of Wisc Milwaukee | MIL | M | GP | 16405 | | 15 | Indiana University | IND | M | GL | 16340 | | 16 | Univ of Wisc La Crosse | LAX | M | GP | 16180 |
