Driver Tips
Written and Contributed by Ryan Christopher.
Ryan is a UGA Alum, a Mens 1 slalom skier, and an AWSA assistant driver.
5 Keys to Driving Slalom
1. When you first drive through the pre-gates, check in the mirror to verify that you are centered in the boat guides.
2. Learn all the ins and outs of every speed control system. Knowing how to use these properly helps both the driver and the skier.
3. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Find out what each individual skier prefers. As a boat driver you are there to help the skier, and if the skier is comfortable with you he or she will ski at a higher level.
4. Every driver makes mistakes. If the skier or wind causes you to get out of position do not try to recover too quickly as this will cause the skier to have slack rope or have the rope pulled out of his or her hands.
5. Never turn into a skier who is skiing the course because this will cause slack rope. A driver wants to think about slightly turning the boat away from a skier in the pre-turn to "pick them up" off the buoy with a tight line.
6. Remember this sport is about slaying buoys, doing chicks, and making big spray. Make sure you have your priorities straight.

“Picture in the morning, sun shining, its light on an absolutely still lake, fog rising from the water, neon slalom buoys perfectly aligned and a boat waiting faithfully at the dock. Can there be anything more beautiful? Not if you are looking through the eyes of a water skier.”
